Weather experts say the start of September could see persistent rainfall, blustery conditions and potential thunderstorms hitting various regions of the UK. However, the changeable conditions might be temporary, with the most recent forecast indicating temperatures could rise in the coming weeks.
Forecast for late August to early September
In its forecast for August 28 to September 6, the Met Office indicates temperatures are expected to remain around typical levels, though "some short-lived warm spells are possible, especially in the south". The chance of warmer conditions then stretches deeper into September. The forecast for September 2 to 21 suggests changeable conditions could persist initially before more settled weather arrives, particularly throughout the South and South-east.
Hot spells possible in the south
Temperatures may also exceed typical levels later in this timeframe, with forecasters noting "the possibility of some hot spells in the south". While the Met Office has not formally forecast a September heatwave, its most recent predictions indicate potential for another period of summery conditions, particularly across southern regions of the UK. This follows a summer which has already brought multiple episodes of extreme heat. Significant areas of the UK have been grappling with drought conditions following extended spells of unusually dry weather, placing additional strain on water resources.
Unsettled start to September
Before these conditions return, the UK may see a far more unsettled start to September. The Met Office indicates that rainfall totals are expected to exceed average levels for this period, while some strong winds could return. "Showers or longer spells of rain are possible across many parts of the UK, along with some strong winds," the Met Office says. "Some heavy bursts and thunderstorms are likely at times. It will likely remain changeable into early September, with rainfall amounts probably above average for the time year and the potential for some more strong winds at times. However, some drier, more settled interludes could develop at times. Temperatures are likely to be near average, although some short-lived warm or hot spells are possible, especially in the south."
