Striking weather maps show dozens of areas across the UK will be battered by heavy downpours tomorrow morning — but temperatures will remain "very mild."
The rain will make a seemingly timid start at around 9pm tonight in south Wales, with some patches of rain also developing in Devon and Scotland. Heavy rain will then take over most of Northern Ireland and the western Scottish Highlands overnight, the Met Office says.
This will move easterly and evolve, turning into heavy rain by 5am, when most of Scotland will be covered. By 6am, heavy rainfall will also cover most of Wales as the band of rain continues to move east throughout the morning.
Rain movement and intensity
Most areas across England will experience patches of heavy rain at various points during the morning as a result. More moderate to heavy rain will then cover Scotland into the afternoon, with some patches also above Northern Ireland. A total of 55 areas will be covered by heavy rain across the UK tomorrow.
Meanwhile, England and Wales will remain largely dry throughout the afternoon and evening. Some areas in the North West, however, will still be hit by moderate to heavy rain throughout the afternoon. By the evening, most of the rain will have cleared all across the UK, precipitation maps from the Met Office show. The level of precipitation will vary between 0.5 and 32mm/hour.
Forecast details
An outlook for tonight provided by the forecaster reads: "Gales developing across northern Scotland this evening. Staying cloudy for many areas overnight, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. A spell of heavy rain will move into the northwest during the early hours. A very mild night to come."
Regarding tomorrow, the Met Office said: "Heavy rain will move southeastwards across England and Wales during the morning with blustery winds, but turning drier and brighter in the afternoon. Heavy showers move into the north later."
Alex Deakin, Met Office meteorologist, explained that despite the heavy rain, temperatures will be "very mild" and hold around 14-15C overnight in the south, with some places even reaching 16-17C. He said a spell of "quite heavy rain" will then move across Northern Ireland and much of Scotland by 4-5am tomorrow, with some of the precipitations also covering the west coast of Wales initially.
Mr Deakin said: "Tuesday will start pretty wet through central and southern Scotland, northwest England and much of Wales. A narrowing band of rain moving across all of England as we go though Tuesday morning. [...] Much brighter skies follow on behind, with plenty of sunshine in the Midlands, south Wales and southern England on Tuesday afternoon."
