Poppit Sands, a wide dune-backed beach at the mouth of the River Teifi in Wales, offers golden sands, estuary views, and occasional dolphin sightings. It is part of Cardigan Bay, described by Time Out in 2023 as home to the “most underrated” town in west Wales, Cardigan. The beach features soft sand, wildlife, a bakery café, and ample space for beachgoers.
Wildlife and Coastal Walks
Porpoises and dolphins are frequently seen along the coastal path between Poppit Sands and Strumble, where Cardigan Bay curves. The undulating dunes host birds, butterflies, and insects. Rock pools at low tide reveal marine life. Birdwatchers can spot guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, and kittiwakes. The beach is also part of the Wales Coastal Park and the start of the 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path.
Beachside Amenities
Facilities include paid parking near the shoreline, public toilets, and Crwst beachside café and bakery. Run by husband-and-wife team Osian and Catrin Jones, Crwst offers coffee, cakes, locally made ice cream, Torth y Wlad Sourdough, Brioche Doughnuts, Cinnamon Swirls, Portuguese Custard Tarts, toasties, rolls, Conti's Ice Cream, and Bay Roasters Coffee. The café is dog-friendly and popular with locals and visitors.
Nearby Attractions
Inland, the riverside village of St Dogmaels features a ruined abbey. The Ferry Inn, a waterside pub with estuary views, serves meals. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path can be accessed from the beach, with walks towards St Dogmaels, Bae Ceibwr, and back via the Coast Path.
Dolphin and Seal Spotting
Cardigan Bay hosts the largest population of dolphins in Europe. Boat trips with 'A Bay to Remember' depart from St Dogmaels. A one-hour RIB ride allows sightings of herring gulls, razorbills, dolphins, and Atlantic grey seals. The seals, scientific name meaning “sea pig with a hooked nose,” are often seen lounging on rocks.
