Isle of Mull Named One of World's 50 Best Islands

The Isle of Mull, a Scottish island in the Inner Hebrides, has been named one of the world's 50 best islands by travel website Big 7, ranking 23rd above popular destinations such as Barbados, Sardinia, and Mauritius.

Stunning Coastline and Colourful Capital

Mull is the second-largest of Scotland's Inner Hebrides and the country's fourth-largest island, with a population of 3,063 that swells significantly during the tourist season. The island is renowned for its dramatic coastline, clear blue waters, and the colourful seafront buildings of its capital, Tobermory. Tobermory's bright, multicoloured houses are a famous landmark and served as the filming location for the children's television show Balamory.

Wildlife and Natural Attractions

The island is particularly noted for its wildlife. Highland cows are a common sight, often seen relaxing by the sea. Mull is also a prime destination for whale and dolphin watching, and visitors may spot golden or white-tailed sea eagles. The highest point on the island is Ben More, a mountain that rises 966 metres (3,169 feet) above the surrounding landscape.

According to Big 7, the list celebrates islands that offer a diverse range of experiences, from Asia to the Americas. Sri Lanka topped the list, praised for its combination of ancient temples, mountains, and wildlife safaris. Other islands featured include Milos in Greece, Corsica, Greenland, and Mauritius.

Only UK Island on the List

Mull is the only UK island to make the top 50, securing its place at number 23. The recognition highlights the island's unique blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural charm, making it a standout destination for travellers seeking a picturesque escape without leaving the British Isles.
