Scotland is set for a washout on Sunday, July 5, as a large band of rain sweeps across nearly the entire country, according to Met Office forecasts. However, conditions are expected to improve from Wednesday, July 8, with warmer air and sunshine returning.
Rain and Wind on Sunday
Met Office weather maps show wet weather covering most of Scotland on Sunday. Only Moray and Aberdeenshire are expected to escape the worst of the rain. Areas including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Fife, Perth and Kinross, the Highlands, the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Argyll and Bute, Stirling, the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland are all set to experience spells of rain.
The Met Office says Sunday will be "cloudier across Northern Ireland and Scotland, with further rain here," while much of England and Wales enjoys warm sunshine. Strong, gusty winds are also forecast across Scotland, with tightly packed isobar lines indicating windy conditions throughout Sunday.
Weather experts at Meteored predict Inverness will see the heaviest rain, with around 7.9mm forecast on Sunday alone. Glasgow is also expected to have a wet day, with almost 5mm of rain after a soggy Saturday. The forecaster noted: "Look closely at the isobar lines on the pressure maps - they are tightly packed across Scotland. That means strong, gusty winds for Scotland and Northern Ireland on Sunday."
29 Areas Affected
The Met Office forecasts rain across the following parts of Scotland on Sunday, July 5: Angus, Argyll and Bute, Clackmannanshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Dundee, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Lothian, East Renfrewshire, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife, Glasgow, Highland, Inverclyde, Midlothian, Na h-Eileanan Siar (Western Isles), North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Orkney Islands, Perth and Kinross, Renfrewshire, Scottish Borders, Shetland Islands, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, Stirling, West Dunbartonshire, and West Lothian.
Improvement from Wednesday
While rain is expected to linger into the start of next week, conditions are set to improve from Wednesday, July 8. The Met Office stated: "Further spells of rain across northwestern parts through Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures near average here. Staying sunny elsewhere and turning locally hot in the southeast. Widely dry and warm Wednesday."
Much of Scotland should see better weather by midweek, with temperatures climbing into the low 20s Celsius. Dundee could reach 24C, Edinburgh 23C, and Glasgow and Pitlochry around 22C. After a wet and windy end to the weekend, the middle of next week looks set to bring a much more summery feel across Scotland.
