Met Office: September Heatwaves Possible for Wales After Rainy Start
Met Office: September Heatwaves Possible for Wales

The Met Office has confirmed that there is a chance of further heatwaves as we head into September. From the end of August through to the beginning of the meteorological autumn, unsettled conditions and heavy rain is likely.

However, in its recently published weather forecast for the first two weeks of September, the Met Office said the UK could experience mixed weather conditions, changing from rain and strong winds to possible heatwaves and hot spells.

Rain and Dry Spells Ahead

Rain has returned to Wales this week, but dry conditions accompanied by colder temperatures are expected for the UK next week. Brief warm, humid spells are possible towards the end of the month for Wales, with this expected to continue into September.

Any rain throughout the first fortnight of September will largely be in the north of the UK, with Wales and the rest of the south of the UK seeing "the driest and sunniest weather."

Met Office Forecast for Early September

The Met Office forecast for Wednesday, September 2 to Wednesday, September 16 states: "As we move into the start of meteorological autumn, it looks like it will start rather unsettled."

"However, signals for the prevailing weather patterns affecting the UK soon become weak, with something close to the climatological norm becoming most likely. This means a broad northwest-southeast split in conditions, with higher pressure becoming centred close to the south of the UK and lower pressure towards the north or northwest."

Southern UK to See Best Weather

"The north and northwest will probably see the lion's share of the rain and any strong winds, whilst the south and southeast will probably see the driest and sunniest weather."

"Temperatures are likely to be a little above average overall. There is a chance that late season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south."
