Charging hours at council-run car parks in Ormskirk are set to be extended under a new Off-Street Parking Places Order proposed by West Lancashire Council. The order, published in a public notice, would standardise charging to 8am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday, replacing the current 8.30am to 5.30pm timetable.
Key changes to parking rules
The order, issued on August 27, 2026, would take effect no sooner than October 19, 2026 if approved. It extends charging hours across all council car parks and introduces new 30-minute free parking periods at Park Road (all bays) and Wheatsheaf (bays one to 12 only), with a ticket required for display.
Derby Street long-stay car park retains its existing free periods — Monday to Friday up to 30 minutes free and Saturday up to four hours free, with tickets required. No charges apply on Sundays and bank holidays, and the “no return within two hours” rule is retained.
Tariffs and permit arrangements
Short-stay car parks (maximum stay four hours) cover Bus Station, Lunesdale, Market Way, Park Pool, Park Road and Wheatsheaf. Charges are £1.00 up to one hour, £1.50 up to two hours, £2.00 up to three hours and £2.50 up to four hours.
Long-stay charges at Derby Street are £3.00 up to five hours and £4.00 up to 10 hours after free periods. Hants Lane, Hutton Way and The Stiles range from £1.00 up to one hour to £4.00 up to 10 hours, depending on duration.
The order formalises conditions of use, allows future cashless parking, regulates electric vehicle charging bays, and provides for public permits (including Hants Lane), staff and elected member permits, and flexible permit arrangements for future schemes.

Responses must be received no later than October 8, 2026.
A copy of the draft order, plans of the affected car parks and the council’s statement of reasons can be viewed on the council’s website or in person at 52 Derby Street during normal office hours. The proposal consolidates and updates off-street parking arrangements in Ormskirk while keeping Sunday and bank holiday parking free.
