Sony has stated that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will be more affordable than a gaming PC, but the company remains tight-lipped on specifics. During an earnings call with investors, Sony's chief financial officer, Lin Tao, addressed how the console will differentiate itself from PCs, especially as physical media becomes less central to the PlayStation experience.
Sony's differentiation strategy
Tao explained that Sony does not view the disc drive as a key differentiator against PCs. Instead, the company will rely on its curated content, including exclusive games, to attract players. 'We don’t feel that the disc is the factor to differentiate from the PC,' Tao said. 'For PC, there’s certain ways to play with the PC as a user. It’s a long tail. Our strength is that the curated contents, that’s one of our strengths.'
She added, 'Compared to the high-end gaming PC, our product is more affordable. We don’t feel that the disc itself is a strong factor for differentiation. Going forward, we can coexist peacefully with PC games.'
Pricing concerns
While the claim of affordability is notable, high-end gaming PCs currently cost at least £1,500, with powerful models exceeding £3,000. Sony has previously indicated it will not sell new hardware at a significant loss, and with rising component costs, rumors suggest the PS6 could retail for around £1,000 or more. That would technically be cheaper than a high-end PC, but still a substantial investment.
The PlayStation 6 is expected to launch in 2027 or 2028, though Sony has not officially confirmed the console's name or release date. The company has hinted at expanding beyond the living room, possibly with a handheld device.
