Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has officially unveiled its new electric Jaguar Type 01 in New York, with key parts of the luxury vehicle set to be built in Merseyside.
The new model is being designed and manufactured in Britain. JLR bosses have described the car as “the most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar ever engineered.”
Production details and Merseyside's role
Production of the new electric model will begin in 2027 at JLR’s Solihull operations. Electric Drive Units (EDUs) and battery packs will be made in Wolverhampton, while pressed body panels will be manufactured in Halewood, Merseyside.
For JLR, a major employer in the region, the launch of the Type 01 marks a major milestone, particularly regarding the strategy it has set out for the Jaguar brand. The automotive giant says this release “establishes a distinct role for Jaguar within JLR's wider portfolio of brands, alongside Range Rover, Defender and Discovery.”
Investment and official reaction
While the Type 01 will be largely built in Solihull, JLR says its major investment will stretch up to the region, with the Halewood plant playing a crucial role in production. The vehicle's pressed body panels are being manufactured at the press shop at Halewood. JLR says work on production lines is at an advanced stage, with production due to begin in 2027.
PB Balaji, CEO of JLR, said: “The unveiling of Type 01 marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Jaguar. Combining British heritage, bold creativity, advanced technology and ground-breaking engineering, it reflects our ambition to create objects of desire that will help us invite a new generation of clients into Jaguar’s loyal and passionate customer base.
“Designed, engineered and built in the UK, Jaguar is a copy of nothing and is a vital part of JLR's growth story, strengthening our House of Brands strategy and supporting long-term investment in British innovation, manufacturing and skills.”
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: “Jaguar’s new EV is a crucial step in JLR’s plans to invest over £15 billion in the UK, and another big vote of confidence in our world-class automotive industry.
“This cutting-edge new model being designed, engineered and built in Britain will support thousands of jobs across the West Midlands and North West, and builds on over £1 billion of UK automotive investment secured just last month – marking another step forward in our mission to reindustrialise Britain.”
