She described it as the "fastest and less messy way" to achieve sparkling grout lines without harsh chemicals or homemade pastes.
Grout is a combination of cement, water, and occasionally sand or other additives. It secures tiles in position, stops moisture from penetrating behind them, and creates a smooth, even surface. Keeping grout lines clean is essential for maintaining the appearance of bathrooms, kitchens, and other tiled spaces. Over time, grout can gather dirt, soap scum, mould, and mildew, which not only diminishes the look of the space but can also cause long-term damage.
Steam cleaner method praised as favourite
Julia highlighted that using a steam cleaner is her "favourite" and "easiest" approach to cleaning grout. She explained: "No paste needed, just steam! The heat melts away grime, making cleaning way faster and less messy. Truly the best method for sparkling grout!"
While some light scrubbing is required, it is minimal and gentle because the steam handles most of the work. The steam cleaner method proved quicker and simpler than her power paste technique, which involved combining baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and essential oils into a paste, allowing it to sit for 15 minutes before scrubbing.
Step-by-step guide to steam cleaning grout
To begin, sweep or vacuum the surface thoroughly to remove all loose dirt, dust, crumbs, and debris from the tile surface and grout lines. Applying steam to dry debris will simply moisten it and force it deeper into the porous grout rather than removing it.
Selecting the appropriate attachment is crucial. Grout lines are narrow and porous, requiring focused, targeted steam to penetrate properly. A narrow jet nozzle is the most effective single tool, delivering high-pressure, concentrated steam directly into the grout line. Position the nozzle at a slight angle towards the grout line rather than pointing it directly downwards. Alternatively, a brass or nylon bristle grout brush attachment can be used, as these are purpose-built for grout and deliver optimal results on particularly dirty lines.
Speed, angle, and finishing touches
Experts recommend moving the attachment at roughly one inch per second, which may initially feel almost static. The steam requires sufficient time to penetrate the porous grout and work on stains below the surface. When using the jet nozzle, position it one to two inches above the grout surface at a slight angle of approximately 30 to 45 degrees. This angle channels the steam pressure directly into the grout pores rather than deflecting it off the surface, driving dislodged debris out of the grout line ahead of the nozzle rather than forcing it back in.
