Shokz OpenDots 2 Earbuds: A Secure and Comfortable Fit
The latest release from Shokz, the OpenDots 2, combines an earclip design with a compact shape, multiple microphones for calls, and AI noise reduction. These open-ear earbuds aim to solve the discomfort caused by traditional earbuds that seal the ear canal. The OpenDots 2 feature a two-part design: a tiny spherical piece sits inside the ear with the speaker, while a thin band of nickel-titanium encased in silicone reaches a barrel containing the battery. The barrel sits behind the ear, and the tension of the band holds the earbud securely but comfortably. This design ensures they stay in place during workouts, a major use case for such earbuds.
Testing Methodology
Technology critic David Phelan swapped his go-to earbuds for the Shokz OpenDots 2 for a weekend. He assessed fit, usability, and listening experience, focusing on audio performance. The earbuds weigh 6.4g each, with a case weight of 38.8g. They offer 10 hours of battery life in the buds and 30 hours in the case, with an IP57 water resistance rating. The earbuds have two air-conduction microphones and one bone-conduction microphone.
Design and Comfort
The OpenDots 2 are available in black and grey. The contoured silicone cover material is soft and smooth, adding to comfort. The earbuds are sweatproof with an IP57 rating, up from IP54 on the previous model. Phelan noted that the fit feels reassuringly safe but not cramped. The frame is flexible to fit various ear shapes. The design strikes a balance between chic and technological, looking like jewellery and an audio device. Because they are open-design, they feel comfortable for extended wear, allowing users to hear their surroundings, which is useful in the office or on the street.
Audio Performance
The open design means outside noise is more present, requiring higher volume in noisy environments. However, the audio quality is not compromised. Features like Dolby Audio and enhanced bass ensure music sounds good, especially in quieter environments. Phelan describes the sound as tremendous with real fidelity to the musical source.
Features and Usability
The barrel houses the battery and also serves as a control interface. By tapping, squeezing, or pinching and holding, users can adjust volume, play/pause, and more. The buds work in either ear, using dynamic ear detection to determine orientation. They support Bluetooth multipoint for connecting to two devices simultaneously. Call quality is excellent thanks to three microphones and AI noise reduction, making calls clear even in noisy situations.
Battery Life
The earbuds and case offer a total of 40 hours of listening time: 10 hours in the buds and 30 hours in the case. A five-minute charge provides two hours of playback, twice as fast as the previous generation.
Verdict
The Shokz OpenDots 2 earbuds are lightweight, attractive, and comfortable, avoiding the invasive fit of most earbuds. The open design is less effective in noisy environments, but they make music sound great while allowing awareness of the outside world for safety. Phelan rates them four out of five stars. They are priced at £179 on Amazon.co.uk.
