Images have surfaced online of an updated Nintendo Switch 2 screen, which is speculated to address a ghosting issue some owners have with the current model. According to the Bluesky account Nintendo Patents Watch, it has discovered and shared screenshots of a newer LCD screen it alleges come from a Chinese resale site.
Potential Fix for Motion Blur
While the Nintendo Switch 2 is barely more than a year old, there’s been chatter and speculation of Nintendo releasing new models for the console, such as a more affordable Switch 2 Lite. Even before it came out, it was reported that Samsung was pushing for a Switch 2 model with an OLED screen, which seems inevitable since the original Switch eventually saw an upgraded model with such a screen. Any Switch 2 OLED model is unlikely to launch any time soon but, in the meantime, it’s believed that the console is getting an updated version of its current screen.
Just like the original Switch, the Switch 2 uses an LCD screen though it’s obviously larger and supports higher resolutions than its predecessor. Nintendo Patents Watch believes this is a proper update and not just a simple revision because, per the screenshots, ‘the exposed circuit, connector, and cables are significantly different.’ Exactly what improvements this new screen would provide is unclear, but it’s speculated it could address a ghosting issue some people have with the current Switch 2, where the on-screen visuals can become blurry when in motion, particularly when moving the in-game camera.
Phased Rollout or New Model?
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo is launching a separate model of the Switch 2 with this new screen installed. It’s entirely possible that Nintendo will begin selling the Switch 2 with this updated screen and gradually phase out the original model. It’s also been theorised this screen could be used for the new Switch 2 model that’s releasing in Europe, which will let owners replace the internal battery and is being made to comply with new European Union legislation. As such, you shouldn’t expect the hardware to see a significant upgrade beyond the new screen.
OLED Model Still Years Away
As for the Switch 2 OLED model, it’s probably years away considering the Switch 1 OLED model didn’t come out until 2021, four years after the original Switch 1. The Switch 2 will also be seeing a price increase later this year, just as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have. Nintendo still has yet to confirm what the new price will be here in the UK but, based on the price hike in the US, it’s estimated to jump from £395.99 to £429.99.
