Google Cloud outage hits Revolut, Lloyds, HSBC and more

A widespread internet outage, apparently linked to Google Cloud, has taken down multiple major services including Revolut, Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Bank of Scotland and Screwfix, leaving users unable to access their money or make payments.

The disruption began early on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with Revolut users reporting a "Something went wrong" message when opening the app, instructing them to "try again later". More than 1,500 Revolut users had reported issues by 8.09am, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.

Revolut confirms service disruption

In a post on X, Revolut Support confirmed they are aware of the service disruption and are "working to restore full service as quickly as possible". The statement read: "We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple features, which may result in some services being inaccessible. Our engineering team is actively working to restore full service as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Despite the outage, Revolut's status page reportedly continued to read that "all systems are operational", prompting frustration among users. One X user wrote: "Hello Revolut your entire IOS app is down, but your page says all systems functioning???? How is this possible?." Another added: "Revolut is down almost worldwide right now. Status page says All systems are operational".

Impact spreads to other banks and retailers

The outage has also hit Lloyds Bank, with nearly 500 customers reporting issues by 9.33am. HSBC followed, with over 250 users reporting problems by 10.10am. Bank of Scotland, owned by Lloyds Banking Group, saw nearly 153 reports by 9.57am, and Screwfix had over 60 users reporting issues at 9.58am.

Lloyds customers reported being unable to login to online banking, with one user tweeting: "@LloydsBank are you having problems with online banking? We cannot login and get beyond the user name login screen." A user of both Lloyds and Revolut complained they had "zero access" to their money, writing: "So both Revolut and Lloyds are down meaning I now have ZERO access to my own money! And this is why the world of banking should not go cashless folks!"

Users report being stranded and humiliated

Revolut customers worldwide reported being left stranded. One user claimed to be stuck in "rural China" while another said they were unable to pay for a "ticket to go back to Malaga for work" and were "stuck in Madrid". A mother said she was stranded at an Australian petrol station, unable to pay for fuel or get home to her children, with her tweet amassing nearly 700 likes.

Other customers reported being "humiliated" when their cards were declined at supermarkets, with one saying: "Just got humiliated while shopping groceries and my cards are just declining." Another said: "I'm in Greece on holiday. Revolut not working on three accounts." A customer in the UK expressed disappointment in Revolut, saying their "communication needs to be better" after being late to a placement because they could not move money to their main account.

The outage appears to be linked to Google Cloud, which operates internet infrastructure for a whole range of other services. It is unclear however whether all of the problems are related.

Revolut, headquartered in London, has 13 million UK customers and over 80 million global customers spanning more than 40 countries. It was founded by Nikolay Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko, who launched it in July 2015 at the Level39 tech accelerator in Canary Wharf.
