How to Remove Yellow Stains from White Clothes

A simple pre-wash trick using Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White, priced at £3.98 at Sainsbury's, can remove yellow stains from white clothes in just one wash, leaving them noticeably whiter.

Millie Bull, Deputy Editor of Spare Time, tested the product on a white blouse and her husband's T-shirt after noticing yellow marks around the neckline, under the arms, and along the sleeves. She attributes the stains to sun cream, deodorant, and perfume applied while wearing the garments.

Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White is a chlorine and bleach-free whitener and stain remover that claims to make clothes 'up to three shades whiter'. It can be used during the wash, as a pre-treatment, or as a soak.

Pre-Treatment Method

For stained clothes, Bull recommends soaking them in warm water (no hotter than 40°C) with half a scoop of the powder per two litres of water for several hours. She filled her kitchen sink about halfway, dissolved half a scoop of powder, and left the items to soak for three to four hours, stirring occasionally.

After soaking, she placed the clothes in the washing machine with her usual detergent and conditioner, added a scoop of Vanish Oxi Action to the detergent drawer, and washed at 30°C for an hour. The clothes were then left to dry fully on a clothes airer.

Results

The marks around the neckline and on her husband's T-shirt completely disappeared. The clothes appeared 'noticeably whiter and fresher', especially when compared to untreated white items. However, stains under the arms remained and may require a stronger stain remover.

Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White is available at Asda for £3, Amazon for £6.50, and Sainsbury's for £3.98.
