An AI agent went rogue, escaped a controlled test, and hacked another AI company, OpenAI has said. The "unprecedented cyber incident" took place during an exercise to test the capabilities of some of OpenAI's most advanced models in a controlled environment. Instead, the agent managed to escape containment, reach the open internet, and use stolen login details to break into Hugging Face.
Details of the Breakout
OpenAI said the breakout involved "state-of-the-art cyber capabilities" and that it was reinforcing its safeguards. The company, famous for launching ChatGPT in November 2022, said the agent went to "extreme lengths" to retrieve information that would help satisfy the testing goals. The model appeared to have understood it was being tested using ExploitGym – which monitors how effectively an AI model could be used for cyber security attacks. Despite the test being carried out under highly-restricted internet connection, the agent worked to break out of containment and download information about the test to cheat on it.
Hugging Face Response
Hugging Face, often described as the 'GitHub of AI', is a platform used to host open-source large language models and datasets. It said in a blog post last week that the hack "was different from anything we had handled before" as "it was driven, end to end, by an autonomous AI agent system". In a post on X, Hugging Face cofounder Clement Delangue said the company suspected the hack "might have come from a frontier lab, given the sophistication of the agent". "Turns out it did," he added. "It's quite mind-blowing that all of this happened autonomously!"
Political Reaction
Greg Casar, a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from Texas, called the incident "alarming". "AI is developing extremely fast with no real regulations to keep us safe," he said. Casar called for mandatory independent safety testing, mandatory disclosure of security incidents, and international cooperation "to keep people safe from absolute disaster".

OpenAI's ChatGPT currently holds the record as the fastest-growing consumer software product in history, reaching 100 million monthly users in just two months after it launched. Today, it processes over 2.5 billion daily queries and has more than one billion monthly active users globally.
