Microwave Fried Eggs in 60 Seconds: Expert Secret

An egg expert has revealed a method to make 'perfect' fried eggs in just 60 seconds using a microwave, eliminating the need for a frying pan. Tom Ferris from Roostys explains that the technique produces eggs that look, taste, and feel like traditionally fried eggs but require no hob or large amounts of oil.

Microwave Method for Fried Eggs

According to Ferris, the key is understanding how eggs react to microwave energy: they cook "incredibly fast." The challenge is controlling the cooking to keep the yolk soft and prevent a rubbery texture. "A tiny bit of oil and the right timing make all the difference," he said.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To prepare, you need a microwave-safe bowl or mug, a paper towel, one egg, and a tablespoon of cooking oil. Ferris recommends any oil like olive, sunflower, or butter for a classic fried flavour. Start by swirling the oil to coat the bowl's bottom, crack the egg in, and gently pierce the yolk with a fork several times. "This is really important, because if you skip, the yolk can literally explode in the microwave," he warned.

Add salt and pepper, cover loosely with a paper towel to create steam and prevent splatter, then microwave on full power for about one minute. For powerful microwaves, 45 seconds may suffice. After cooking, let it rest for one minute to finish cooking gently and develop texture. "You can lift it out with a spoon and pop it straight onto toast," Ferris added.

Additional Egg Cooking Tips

The same microwave technique can be applied to scrambled and poached eggs. Ferris noted that this method is faster and cleaner than traditional frying, making it ideal for quick meals.
