Tapo has announced a new video doorbell that challenges Ring with 4K resolution, free alerts, and no mandatory subscription. The Tapo Doorbell Pro is the brand's first to capture content in 4K and does not require a monthly fee for its core features.
Free features and storage options
Ring doorbells place some useful extras behind a paywall, with subscriptions starting from £4.99 per month. Without that fee, Ring users cannot access recordings or receive smart alerts. Tapo takes a different approach, providing alerts for free and allowing owners to store footage on a microSD card, which is not supplied.
For those who prefer cloud storage, a Tapo Care Plan is available, but it is not essential because most features remain free.
Installation flexibility and smart detection
The device supports both wired and wireless connections. Battery power offers easy installation, while a wired connection unlocks bonus features such as continuous 24-hour recording. Like Ring, the Tapo Doorbell Pro is weatherproof, includes two-way talk, and can detect people, pets, or deliveries. Radar detection is designed to reduce false alerts, and the 4K head-to-toe picture provides clear footage of visitors.
Price and availability
Tapo says the Doorbell Pro will start shipping next month. It costs £219.99, which is over £130 more than Ring's equivalent. An early bird deal reduces the price to £159.99, while Amazon's current sale has Ring devices starting from £44.
The Tapo device is not cheap, but it can be used without a monthly payment and offers advanced features. It is a potential alternative for those considering Ring.
