Ring, the Amazon-owned video doorbell brand, offers a range of devices that double as intercoms and security cameras. However, to access the full functionality of its products, including video doorbells, a paid subscription called Ring Protect is required. Without this service, the doorbell still sends alerts to the Ring smartphone app when the button is pressed or motion is detected, allowing a two-way video call with visitors, but nothing is saved.
This is because Ring video doorbells have no internal storage. Instead, the subscription enables footage to be uploaded to the cloud, where it can be streamed or downloaded to a smartphone, tablet, or other devices. Paying for Ring Protect also unlocks features such as package detection and the ability to use multiple Ring devices simultaneously. New Ring products come with a free 30-day trial of Ring Home, allowing users to test the full features before deciding whether to subscribe.
As of early 2026, there are three tiers of Ring Protect. The cheapest, Ring Solo, costs £4.99 per month or £49.99 per year and is for use with one video doorbell or security camera. Ring Multi costs £7.99 per month or £79.99 per year and supports multiple Ring devices at the same property. The top tier, AI Pro, costs £15.99 per month or £159.99 annually and adds artificial intelligence-powered features.
Ring Solo includes cloud storage for 180 days, person and package detection, video clips in notifications, and a daily summary of recorded activity. Ring Multi includes all Solo features but allows unlimited cameras and doorbells at one location. For both tiers, 24/7 recording can be added for an extra £3 per month per device.
AI Pro adds smarter features such as written descriptions of videos, grouping similar motion events to reduce alert overload, and an AI-enhanced search tool. Ring has faced criticism over price increases, with a rise of over 40 per cent in March 2024.
