Google has introduced a significant update to its Gemini AI chatbot, enabling it to automatically remember past conversations and personal details of users. The new ‘Personalised Context’ setting is designed to make interactions feel more tailored by recalling hobbies, preferences and creative projects.
The feature is enabled by default, but users can manually switch it off through the Gemini app. According to Michael Siliski, a senior director at Gemini, the setting allows the AI to learn from previous chats over time, leading to “more natural and relevant conversations”.
Alongside this, Google has launched ‘Temporary Chats’ – a privacy-focused option akin to Chrome’s incognito mode. These conversations are not saved to chat history or Gemini Apps Activity, and are only retained for up to 72 hours to process feedback. Users can activate it via a button next to ‘New Chat’ in the side menu.
The update is initially rolling out to users of Gemini 2.5 Pro in selected countries, with wider availability expected later. It mirrors a similar memory feature introduced by OpenAI’s ChatGPT in April, which has been linked to an increase in unusual responses.
