Firefighters are tackling a large blaze at an industrial estate in Greenfield, Greater Manchester, with a Tesco supermarket forced to close and residents urged to stay away.
Blaze on Chew Valley Road
Ten crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene on Chew Valley Road, where thick plumes of smoke are billowing into the sky. The fire was reported just after 7.45am on Sunday 16 August.
A statement from the fire service said: "Just after 7.45am on Sunday 16 August, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at an industrial building on Chew Valley Road, Greenfield."
"10 fire engines and a number of specialist appliances from across Greater Manchester are now in attendance, with firefighters working hard to bring the fire under control."
Tesco closed and safety advice
Tesco has temporarily shut its store on nearby Wellington Road. A spokesperson said: "Our Greenfield Superstore is temporarily closed due to a fire nearby. We apologise for the inconvenience."
The fire service added: "Due to the amount of smoke, nearby residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed. A cordon is in place and people should avoid the area if possible."
Specialist unit at scene
A specialist environmental unit has arrived to tackle the blaze, with reports of toxic materials at the location. Firefighters are using a hydraulic platform as black smoke surrounds the area.
The specific building and cause of the fire have not yet been confirmed.
