Black Tea: The Natural Ingredient for Shinier Wooden Floors
Black Tea: Natural Ingredient for Shinier Wooden Floors

Black tea is the natural kitchen ingredient that can keep wooden floors shiny and deter dust for longer, according to flooring experts at Hyperion Tiles. The tannins found in black tea help bring out the natural richness of wooden floors, adding a subtle shine without damaging the surface.

Why Black Tea Works for Hardwood Floors

The experts explained that tannins in black tea lift and cut through grime, cleaning floors and keeping them free of dust for longer. Unlike modern cleaning sprays that often leave residue or dull the finish over time, tea is a gentle yet effective alternative.

“This method is a fantastic example of how natural ingredients can be just as effective as modern cleaners, without the risk of damaging high-quality flooring,” they said. “We always recommend gentle, pH-balanced cleaning solutions for hardwood and tiled floors, and black tea fits perfectly into that category. It’s an easy, affordable trick that anyone can try at home.”

Preparing the Tea Solution

Although other teas contain tannins, anything other than black tea isn't recommended because tannin levels vary and are either lower or inconsistent. The longer the tea steeps, the more tannins are released into the water.

Laura Harnett, founder of eco-cleaning brand Seep, recommends using 10 to 15 tea bags in a large saucepan full of water. She instructed, “Leave them boiling for about 15 minutes to make sure all the tannins have been extracted.”

How to Clean Wooden Floors with Black Tea

Start by bringing just under two litres of water to a boil in a large pan over high heat. Once boiled, turn off the heat and steep the tea bags for around 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, press all remaining liquids out of the tea bags into the tea before discarding them.

Let the tea cool to a barely warm temperature to avoid damaging the floor's finish. Pour the lukewarm mixture into a bucket and test it on a hidden area, such as a corner. Dip a clean cloth into the tea, ring it out well, and apply it in the direction of the woodgrain. Never soak wood floors in water.

Once satisfied with the colour, mop the rest of the floor with the tea using small amounts of water. Let the floor dry to enjoy freshly refreshed hardwoods.
