George Russell has demanded talks with his Mercedes team after a strategy blunder left him outshone by former teammate Lewis Hamilton at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, claimed his first full-distance victory since joining the Italian team, showcasing supreme pace throughout the race.
Russell's Frustration with Strategy
Russell expressed his disappointment after the race, stating that the team's decision to stick with a two-stop strategy cost him a potential win. He believes a three-stop approach would have suited his driving style better, as he struggled with tire degradation in the latter stages.
"In hindsight, the three-stop would probably have suited my style a little bit better because I was struggling a lot towards the end of the stints," Russell said. "It's something I want to pick up with the team."
Hamilton's Triumph
Hamilton's victory was aided by a well-timed Virtual Safety Car, which allowed him to overcut the Mercedes cars and take the lead. From there, he never looked back, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of Russell. The seven-time world champion now sits second in the drivers' championship, closing the gap to leader Kimi Antonelli to 41 points.
"I definitely will take it. It's a long, long way to go," Hamilton said. "They still have great pace as we can see, but we're going to keep working and trying to close that gap."
Mixed Emotions for Russell
Despite his frustration, Russell managed to secure second place after teammate Antonelli suffered an engine failure late in the race. This allowed Russell to score 18 points, reducing the gap to Antonelli in the championship standings to 50 points.
"I'll just take the positives away: It was a clean Friday, clean Saturday and I came away with 18 points. That's 18 more than I've done in the last two races," Russell added.
Russell remains third in the drivers' championship, but with the season still young, he hopes to bounce back in upcoming races. The Mercedes team will need to address their strategic shortcomings if they are to challenge Ferrari and Hamilton for the title.
