Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has made a surprising return to football management, taking over as head coach of Saudi Arabian club Al-Nasr. The Australian tactician will now oversee Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, marking a high-profile reunion in the Middle East.
Contract and Confirmation
Al-Nasr officially confirmed the appointment via a social media statement on Friday. The club said: "Mr. Ange Postecoglou as coach of the first football team at Al Nasr club. And that with a contract extending for two seasons. Our best wishes for success to him and his staff in their journey with the Global Club, God willing." The deal is reportedly lucrative, though financial terms were not disclosed.
Postecoglou's Career Path
The 60-year-old Australian previously managed Celtic, where he won multiple Scottish Premiership titles, before a stint at Tottenham that ended in 2024. After leaving Spurs, he worked as a pundit for ITV during the World Cup. He had also been linked with the Scotland national team job as a potential replacement for Steve Clarke.
Rivalry with Brendan Rodgers
Postecoglou is set to face off against another former Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers, who now manages Al-Qadsiah in the same Saudi Pro League. Their teams will meet in the upcoming season, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the league.
Impact on Al-Nasr
Al-Nasr, one of Saudi Arabia's most successful clubs, boasts a squad featuring Cristiano Ronaldo and other international talents. Postecoglou's appointment is expected to bring an attacking style of play, similar to his philosophy at Celtic and Tottenham. The club aims to challenge for the Saudi Pro League title and make a mark in Asian competitions.
