Newcastle Unveils St James' Park Upgrades and Concert Plans

Newcastle United has briefed supporters on significant changes to St James' Park for the 2026/27 season, starting with the installation of new scoreboards. For the first time since 1993, the Gallowgate End will boast a scoreboard, addressing the fact that not all fans can see the existing screen at the Leazes End.

According to notes from the June Fan Advisory Board meeting, stadium chief Brad Miller confirmed that two new scoreboards will be erected: one at the Strawberry corner and one on the other side of the Gallowgate End, while the big screen at the Leazes End is being replaced. Miller assured fans that no seats would be lost and that supporter views would not be affected by the screens.

Pitch Redevelopment and Concert Ambitions

The meeting also provided an update on the £10m pitch redevelopment, with construction staff working to prepare the new surface for the first pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen. Miller outlined changes to the pitch gradient and drainage to improve water movement and overall pitch quality.

Newcastle has made clear its ambition to host more concerts and increase commercial revenue. The meeting minutes stated: "The work included new drainage and changes beneath the pitch surface, which should give the groundstaff greater confidence to host more matches and, importantly, create a concert window across both June and July rather than only June."

Last summer, Sam Fender played two sell-out nights at St James' Park, and the club is keen to make the stadium a regular concert venue. Speculation is mounting that Oasis could play two dates at St James' Park in 2027 as part of a follow-up tour to last year's reunion, with online suggestions that the band might also play twelve nights at the Etihad Stadium.

Fan Engagement and Future Plans

Newcastle United continues to engage with supporters through the Fan Advisory Board, ensuring that upgrades are communicated transparently. The new scoreboards and pitch improvements are part of a broader strategy to enhance the matchday experience and maximize the stadium's potential for events beyond football.
