Bulgarian football club Levski Sofia has announced a £105 million redevelopment of its Georgi Asparuhov Stadium, transforming it into a modern multi-purpose venue capable of hosting top-tier European football and major concerts. The project, developed with Bulgarian firm IPA, is set to begin construction in spring 2027.
Key Capacity Details
The revamped stadium will seat 24,718 for domestic matches, with UEFA regulations reducing capacity to 23,032 for European fixtures. For concerts, the venue can expand to accommodate up to 40,000 people, more than double the current concert capacity of around 17,600.
UEFA Category IV Standards
The redevelopment aims to meet UEFA's highest Category IV standards, enabling Levski Sofia to host European club competition matches. The design includes a fully covered seating bowl, new lighting, sound systems, and giant video screens.
Architectural and Community Features
A striking perforated metal façade with integrated lighting will enhance acoustics and reduce noise for neighbouring areas. The project also includes upgraded public spaces and energy-efficient features. A club spokesperson said: "The project also includes completely renovated lighting, sound and video systems that will meet the demands of modern football and the expectations of the audience."
Entertainment and Economic Impact
The stadium is designed to host large-scale concerts, helping Bulgaria attract more international acts. Queen and Adam Lambert performed at the venue in 2016. Currently, Sofia's 43,000-capacity Vasil Levski Stadium is the country's main live music venue. Once completed, Georgi Asparuhov Stadium will become one of Bulgaria's most modern sporting venues, boosting Levski Sofia's matchday revenue and ability to host major events.
