Bahrain GP Grid: Penalties Reshape Sepang Starting Order

Max Verstappen secured his first pole position of the season at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, with Lewis Hamilton joining him on the front row at Sepang. However, the starting order for Sunday's race differs from the qualifying results due to several grid penalties.

Penalties Shake Up Top Ten

Isack Hadjar impressed with the third-fastest time in qualifying, but a five-place grid drop for the Frenchman means he will start eighth. As a result, Kimi Antonelli inherits third place and shares row two with Charles Leclerc. Both McLaren drivers also gain positions, while George Russell moves up to seventh after a difficult Saturday for Mercedes at the circuit of their long-time title sponsors Petronas.

Further Drops Further Back

Franco Colapinto helped team-mate Pierre Gasly into the top 10 during Q2, but Gasly now faces a 15-place grid penalty – 10 for new engine parts and five carried over from the crash he caused at last weekend's Azerbaijan GP. Arvid Lindblad will start from the back of the grid after taking three new engine components beyond his annual allowance, triggering automatic 10-place drops that convert to a back-of-grid start.

The provisional starting grid with penalties applied is: Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Lando Norris (McLaren), Oscar Piastri (McLaren), George Russell (Mercedes), Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Carlos Sainz (Williams), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Nico Hulkenberg (Audi), Oliver Bearman (Haas), Esteban Ocon (Haas), Alex Albon (Williams), Valtteri Bottas (Cadillac), Sergio Perez (Cadillac), Franco Colapinto (Alpine), Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls).
