Tottenham agree Vicario exit as Juventus loan nears

Tottenham have agreed a deal with Juventus for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Standard Sport understands that Vicario will head to Turin on an initial season-long loan that includes the option for a permanent transfer next summer worth £8.5million.

Move to Juventus

The Italian international - who is travelling for a medical - has been a long-time target for Juventus, but it looked as though they had opted to pursue a move for Emiliano Martinez instead after Aston Villa agreed a deal with Parma for Zion Suzuki. After negotiations for Martinez fell apart at the weekend, they quickly turned to Vicario in pursuit of a new No1 goalkeeper.

While the move is not yet finalised, both clubs expect it to go through, bringing an end to Vicario’s three-year stay in north London.

Spurs career

Brought in from Serie A side Empoli as a replacement for Hugo Lloris in 2023, Vicario established himself as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper but struggled for form and fitness last season.

Vicario did not feature for Spurs after undergoing hernia surgery during the March international break and lost his place in the side to Antonin Kinsky.

Exit from Spurs

Kinsky’s impressive performances in the final seven games of the season earned him the trust of head coach Roberto De Zerbi and left Vicario’s future in doubt heading into the summer.

After Kinsky was rewarded with an improved contract in June, the writing was on the wall for Vicario and ultimately both parties will be glad to have negotiated his exit from the club after a summer of drawn-out negotiations.

Vicario is set to become the latest senior figure to depart Spurs this summer after the sales of captain Cristian Romero and England full-back Djed Spence, who joined Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan respectively over the weekend.

Vicario had previously served as vice-captain to Romero at Tottenham, with De Zerbi now left needing to select a new leadership group.
