Marcus Rashford has told Manchester United exactly what they wanted to hear at the World Cup, insisting his full focus is on England's quest for glory rather than his club future. The forward's permanent move to Barcelona fell apart before the tournament, leaving his long-term plans uncertain.
Rashford's Candid Comments on Barcelona Move
Speaking to journalists at England's training base, Rashford was open when asked about his desire to complete a transfer to Barcelona earlier this year. "I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay. We will see," he said when questioned whether he expected his temporary spell in Catalonia to become permanent.
The Manchester United forward continues to have three posts of pictures of him at Barca pinned on his Instagram profile, and one must scroll a long way to find any reference to United. Yet should Rashford still harbour hopes of rejoining Barcelona this summer, he is likely to face disappointment.
United's Stance on Rashford's Future
United have no appetite for entertaining another loan for the academy product and have consistently maintained that if Barca opted against paying the £26million required to sign Rashford, they would pursue alternative options. Having already declined to pay a reasonable fee for the forward, if Rashford departs United next season, it seems improbable that the Nou Camp will be his destination.
The World Cup was always destined to complicate things this summer, yet that hasn't prevented several significant deals from being finalised. Manchester City have wrapped up the £116m acquisition of Elliot Anderson, and numerous other players competing at the World Cup have had their club situations resolved. However, Rashford will not be joining them.
Rashford Prioritises England's World Cup Campaign
"I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup, I wanted it (a move) done before," he told reporters on Saturday. "If it's not, I wanted it to wait until after. I want to be fully present in the moment. We're fighting for something special."
Any United supporter reluctant to see Rashford return to the club might initially view these remarks as unwelcome news for the Red Devils. Should England progress to the World Cup final, they will remain in North America for at least a fortnight longer. Like all players involved in the tournament, Rashford will then be granted a period of rest before the new campaign begins, and with the transfer window shutting on September 3, the timeframe for United to offload Rashford suddenly appears rather limited.
Behind-the-Scenes Negotiations Continue
However, Rashford's decision not to dwell on his future doesn't mean negotiations have stopped behind the scenes. Clubs remain free to approach United regarding the forward, and the reality is that the more Rashford focuses on England's quest for World Cup success, the greater the likelihood he will perform well and boost his market value.
There was nothing especially groundbreaking about Rashford's remarks, and his conversation with journalists would have attracted considerably more scrutiny had he suggested he was preoccupied with his United situation. United require Rashford to focus on his performances, and should he excel in the tournament's closing stages, it can only benefit the club. The rest is up to United.
