Newcastle United have made an enquiry for RB Leipzig midfielder Nicolas Seiwald, while a move for Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall appears unlikely due to the financial demands. The Magpies are still looking to strengthen their midfield despite the arrivals of Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
Bergvall Move Unlikely
According to The Athletic, a move for Bergvall has been discussed at Newcastle, but his asking price makes a move unlikely, with chiefs reportedly baulking at Tottenham's financial demands. Links to the 20-year-old emerged before the arrival of Matthias Jaissle, and it is claimed that the new head coach is expected to have his own midfield targets that were not previously under consideration.
Chronicle Live understands that Newcastle were offered Bergvall, with an enquiry made over a price tag and some numbers mooted, but no formal offer was made. Discussions took place between the two boards last month, but there has not been any further contact.
Seiwald Targeted
An enquiry for RB Leipzig star Nicolas Seiwald has been made by Newcastle, according to Sky Sports Germany's Philipp Hinze. The Austria international played under Jaissle at RB Salzburg and remains a fan, but the 25-year-old is firmly part of Leipzig's plans. Seiwald is on the radar of Newcastle, but there is yet to be an approach. He started all of Austria's games at the World Cup after playing 37 times last season.
Newcastle want to strengthen in midfield, and given Seiwald's relationship with Jaissle, links to the RB Leipzig star make sense. Unlike for Palhinha, the Magpies may face a fight to sign him, with Leipzig preparing for the new season with him in their plans.
