Newcastle open talks for Man City's Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle United have reportedly opened talks with Manchester City over a potential move for midfielder Nico Gonzalez, following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes from the club.

Exploratory talks underway

According to The Athletic, talks for the Spanish midfielder are among a number of exploratory conversations currently being carried out by the club. The move would bolster manager Matthias Jaissle's midfield options.

Gonzalez made 41 appearances for City last season, but started just two games after January, including the final game of the season where Pep Guardiola played a number of fringe players.

Player's stance

The 24-year-old said he had no qualms with the amount of game time at the Etihad Stadium after his £52m move in January 2025.

"I’m happy here," Nico previously said. "I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here.

"I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position."

"That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything."

More updates are expected as the transfer window progresses.
