Mexico Furious Over England World Cup Match Reschedule

Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre has expressed fury over the potential rescheduling of their World Cup 2026 clash with England, which is set to be moved forward by six hours due to the threat of storms. The match, originally scheduled for 1am BST (6pm local time in Mexico City), will now kick off at 7pm BST on Sunday evening (midday in Mexico City). Tournament safety regulations mandate a 30-minute delay if lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium.

Aguirre's Reaction

Aguirre described the change as "a kick in the stomach" in an interview with radio station Grupo Formula. "You change everything, the game plan, everything. Not that everything goes down the drain, but almost because you're changing six hours. I don't like it at all, but evidently, we will abide by what FIFA says. But I especially don't like any of it, and neither do my players."

The Mexico boss revealed he was notified of the change by FIFA on Friday afternoon, but the governing body has yet to publicly confirm the decision or announce a new kick-off time. "Not a minor change, the change is important. I can understand their reasoning and arguments, but nobody consulted me. I'm very upset," Aguirre added.

England Also Angered

England are also reported to be seething over the alteration, with the Football Association (FA) allegedly not consulted. The FA is concerned about the impact on fans and logistics for Thomas Tuchel's team. Tournament rules state FIFA has the authority to "cancel, reschedule or relocate" matches at its sole discretion.

Weather Concerns

Advancing the kick-off by six hours should bypass the worst of the weather, reducing the likelihood of interruptions. Mexico's previous encounter with Ecuador was disrupted by lightning, highlighting the risks. The change aims to avoid similar issues, but both teams remain unhappy with the lack of consultation.
