England full-back George Furbank has been ruled out of today's Nations Championship clash with South Africa after being rushed to hospital with appendicitis. The Northampton captain was set to make his first England start in nearly two years, but suffered painful symptoms following Friday's captain's run at Ellis Park.
Late Injury Blow for England
England have yet to officially confirm the 29-year-old's withdrawal, but the Telegraph reports he will miss the match. This leaves head coach Steve Borthwick with a selection dilemma for the number 15 jersey against the Springboks. Harlequins fly-half Marcus Smith is the obvious replacement, as the other specialist full-back in the squad, Freddie Steward, is carrying an ankle injury.
Furbank's absence is a significant setback for both the player and the team. He had spoken on Thursday about his challenging time with injuries, saying: "It was pretty tough to be honest. Just playing again felt a long way off at times. I was just incredibly grateful to get back playing, firstly for Saints and once I got a run there it was about trying to get back into the senior squad and trying to get a start for this team again."
Furbank's Injury History
Furbank has been plagued by a series of injuries since his last England start against Japan in November 2024. He has suffered a broken arm, recurring calf and knee injuries, and a concussion that affected his involvement in this year's Six Nations. Having seemingly turned a corner, he will now likely miss England's remaining Nations Championship Tests against Fiji and Argentina.
Borthwick had praised Furbank's playmaking ability earlier in the week, stating: "I think it is brilliant to have George Furbank at 15. While he does not have a huge number of caps, he brings an experience and a calmness around him. You can see he is a captain, he’s a leader. It has been a challenging 18 months for him. I have been into Northampton a number of times where I have watched him train, watched him have such a great influence up there, but I have also been stood with him on the touchline when he’s been unable to train. You can sense the frustration."
Impact on England's Plans
Furbank's absence forces Borthwick to reshuffle his backline just hours before kick-off. Marcus Smith, primarily a fly-half, is the most likely candidate to start at full-back, given his experience in the position. The match against South Africa is a crucial fixture in the Nations Championship, and England will need to adapt quickly without their playmaking full-back.
