England's final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica has been delayed after severe storms and lightning battered the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game, originally scheduled for 9pm UK time, has been pushed back to 10pm due to dangerous weather conditions.
Stadium hit by torrential rain and lightning
The Inter&Co Stadium was hit by heavy wind and rain, with lightning strikes reported nearby. Fans were advised to take shelter as a thunderstorm warning was issued. The big screen displayed a message urging supporters to return to their seats once the storm passed.
Chief football writer John Cross, reporting from the scene, described the intensity of the storm: "There has been the loudest clap of thunder I've ever heard in my life! They have strict rules in the US about being out in the open during electrical storms, so I'm stranded in a deli near the stadium."
Weather conditions and pitch concerns
Cross noted that the weather was "absolutely crazy" but remained optimistic: "I've seen pictures of the pitch and been told the water clears quickly. Also, there's such a different attitude here to weather. Yes, they're cautious but they play until they're finished. That gives me hope." He added that if rain continued, the kick-off would likely be pushed back further.
England's World Cup preparations
The Three Lions recorded a lackluster 1-0 victory over New Zealand on Saturday as part of their final preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed an injury concern ahead of the Costa Rica match, with Bukayo Saka struggling due to an Achilles complaint. The winger is a doubt for the game, but his Arsenal teammates Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke are fully fit.
