Wales and British and Irish Lions icon Taulupe Faletau has signed a one-year contract extension with Cardiff, keeping him at the Arms Park for the 2026-27 season. The 35-year-old number eight's previous deal had expired after an injury-hit campaign, but he has now committed to the club for another year.
Faletau's New Deal Details
Faletau's new contract comes after initial speculation that he might leave for France. Instead, Cardiff head coach Corniel van Zyl will retain the services of the 104-cap Wales international for what will be Faletau's 17th season of professional rugby. Since joining Cardiff in 2022, Faletau has made 30 appearances for the club.
“I’m thrilled to sign another contract at Cardiff,” Faletau said. “The club feels like home and we made some great progress last season. We have improved year on year, now qualifying for next season’s Champions Cup and I’m really looking forward to playing my part.”
Injury Comeback and Future Ambitions
Faletau last played for Wales in the first Test defeat to Japan in Kitakyushu 12 months ago. He has faced frustrating injuries over the past two seasons but expressed confidence in his form when fit. “On a personal level, the past couple of seasons have had some frustrating injuries but I’ve been pleased with my form when I’ve played and I want to give more to this club and the group of players,” he added.
Van Zyl acknowledged Faletau's ambition to return to international rugby: “His ultimate ambition remains to play for Wales so we are happy to help him with that but he also wants to perform for Cardiff.” Wales head coach Steve Tandy has not ruled out an international comeback for Faletau.
Van Zyl Praises Faletau's Impact
Van Zyl highlighted Faletau's value both on and off the pitch. “He is a hugely talented player, who brings a lot of experience and confidence to the group. Every time he plays, he shows he is still one of the best in the game,” van Zyl said. “Off the pitch he is also always willing to look after his peers and pass on his knowledge.”
Van Zyl also noted the management plan for Faletau: “There have been some question marks over his availability given he is in the second part of his career, but we have a good plan in place to manage his training and match minutes.”
Looking Ahead to Cardiff's 150th Season
Faletau expressed excitement about contributing to Cardiff's 150th anniversary season. “Playing at the Arms Park is always really special and I am looking forward to getting back out there with the boys and giving everything I can to the club in its 150th season,” he said. Van Zyl added that the squad is competitive, with back-row players driving each other on.
