Coulthard learned of Red Bull exit in toilet, Horner reveals

Christian Horner has revealed how David Coulthard discovered he was being dropped by Red Bull while in the lavatory. The disclosure comes from Horner's forthcoming memoir, Drive, which launches on October 22.

The former Red Bull team principal, dismissed in 2025 following a misconduct scandal, had wanted Coulthard to announce his own departure. However, Helmut Marko, then team adviser, intervened and told Coulthard during a mutual visit to the facilities.

How the news was delivered

According to an extract from the memoir, Horner told Marko about the plan to replace Coulthard with Sebastian Vettel, stressing: "This has to come from DC. Please don't breathe a word."

The next morning before practice, Coulthard went to the toilet and stood at a urinal next to Marko. "'I hear you're retiring at Silverstone then,' Helmut said, smiling. DC was stunned. 'How do you know that?' 'Because we're taking Vettel next year,' said Helmut, bluntly."

Immediate reaction

Coulthard immediately went to the garage to confirm the rumour with Horner, who could tell from his body language that "something was wrong." Coulthard said: "I think I've just been retired in a toilet."

Horner recalled being annoyed, saying: "I'd wanted DC to know he was respected by everyone at Red Bull and that his departure was being handled with sensitivity. Typically, Helmut had come in like a wrecking ball and crushed a delicate process."

Legacy and aftermath

Horner told Coulthard the decision needed to be his choice and his announcement, referencing Vettel's rise. Coulthard accepted there was "little room for sentimentality" in the sport and was offered an ambassador role.

Vettel secured second place in his maiden Red Bull campaign before claiming four consecutive championships. Coulthard has since become a broadcaster and remains a Sky Sports fixture, while Horner's two-decade tenure at Red Bull has concluded as he considers a possible F1 comeback.
