Slovenia head coach Bostjan Cesar has admitted Benjamin Sesko is in a 'difficult period' after the Manchester United striker was forced to withdraw from the squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures. Sesko had been called up for games against Scotland, North Macedonia and Switzerland but pulled out after suffering further pain in his shin.
Injury setback and club absence
Sesko missed the entirety of pre-season after being forced off during the victory over Liverpool in May. Michael Carrick has taken a cautious approach to the forward's return, but handed him a start in the Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton, where he was replaced on 66 minutes.
The following Saturday, Sesko did not travel to London for the clash against Fulham. Carrick confirmed on Sunday this was due to issues with his shin. On Monday, Sesko confirmed he was withdrawing from the Slovenia squad.
Sesko's message and Cesar's support
"I am very sorry that I will have to miss the national team's upcoming matches. I have always played for Slovenia - and always will - with heart and pride," he wrote on Instagram. "Right now, the most important thing is to focus fully on my recovery. I am already working on getting back on the pitch as soon as possible to help both the national team and my club once again."
"I believe in our guys, and I am certain that this time, too, they will display the team spirit that has always defined us. I can't wait to wear the national team jersey again; until then, I will be Slovenia's biggest supporter. Go Slovenia."
In Slovenia, Sesko has been scrutinised for leaving the squad. He last represented his nation in October last year against Switzerland in World Cup qualifying. Speaking to Planet Nagomet, Cesar sent his sympathies to Sesko.
Recovery plan and return hope
"This isn’t an easy time for Benjamin," he said. "He is going through a difficult period in his career, as we know he hasn’t suffered many injuries in the past. It is an atypical injury that requires time to heal. The most important thing now is for Sesko to surround himself with people he trusts and believes in, and for everyone around him to remain positive."
"That is what he needs. He needs time, he needs good rehabilitation - and Slovenia needs him too, once he is fully healthy." When asked about the pressure Sesko faces playing for United, Cesar added: "We know that when you play for such a big club, things like this happen."
"It is a process that not only Benjamin goes through, but all footballers. Naturally, there was no such criticism when he was fit and scoring goals. He’s aware of this. He is a professional. I believe he doesn’t read these things or let them weigh on his mind."
"He is a young player, and things are moving incredibly fast in his life. But he has already made the mental shift. His mind will have to make such transitions in the future as well."
Sesko has been assessed at Carrington this week, with United putting him on an individual recovery plan. He will hope to be fit for United's return to action on October 10 against Tottenham Hotspur.
