Shankland opens up on injury agony and surgery decision

Rangers captain Lawrence Shankland has opened up on his injury agony and his decision to go under the knife.

The Ibrox frontman has faced recurring hamstring problems in recent seasons, having suffered a similar injury last year at Hearts. The issue forced him off just four minutes into last month's win over Motherwell, with boss Derek McInnes previously speculating that his captain could spend up to three months out if he required surgery.

Recovery progress

The 31-year-old missed crucial clashes, including the double win over Celtic and Sebastien Pocognoli's first Scotland camp, and has now lifted the lid on his fight for fitness.

He said: "The hamstring is healing well after the surgery. It was just a check up to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be. As far as I am aware everything is going in the right direction.

Decision to have surgery

"I never had much of a decision [surgery] when I went to see the surgeon. He told me straight away it was going to need surgery to fix it. It was a follow up scan that confirmed that, so that made it that bit easier to be honest.

"It needed fixed and he had to do it anyway so I was comfortable with it. I had the experience of a similar injury last year, but this time just a bit worse. It needed to happen and I'll get back as soon as I can."

No timeline for return

"It is hard to put a timeline on it to be honest. You need to just wait and see how it feels around that three to four month mark. Everything will be under the physios supervision and how it feels for myself, I need to be comfortable going back out there. Hopefully as quick as possible, but you can't really put an accurate timeline on it."
