Roy Keane has said he would put his medals “in the bin” if he were a Manchester City player, after the club was found guilty of financial breaches by an independent commission.
Premier League verdict and City response
The Premier League issued a statement on Tuesday confirming the verdict, following charges first brought in 2023. City responded by maintaining their innocence and outlining their intention to appeal, with a deadline set for Friday (October 2).
The charges relate to a nine-year spell between 2009 and 2018, during which City won three league titles, one FA Cup and three League Cups, and regularly competed in the Champions League.
Keane's message to City players
Speaking to ITV Sport, Keane said: “Well, do you know what? They [City] knew it would hurt a lot of people, and they’ve still done it. And if I was a player with that bit of success and praise that we've given a lot of credit for - but if I was a player I'd be 100% sticking them medals in the bin.”
When ITV presenter Mark Pougatch asked if he would feel let down by the club, Keane replied: “Oh, 100% of course, of course you would. It's cheating.”
