The River Ayr Way Ultra & Relay will take place on Saturday, September 12, organisers Ayrshire360 have announced, marking the race's 20th year.
Race details and route
The 40-mile ultra marathon starts at Glenbuck Loch and winds through some of Ayrshire's most spectacular scenery to the Riverside Stadium in Ayr. Participants can enter as individuals or as part of a relay team, with teams capped at three people. There is a maximum time of 10 hours to complete the course.
The race begins at 9am, with check-in available from 7.30am to 8.45am at Glenbuck Loch. The course is divided into three sections: Section 1 runs from Glenbuck to Sorn (17 miles, mainly off road on rural paths); Section 2 covers Sorn to Annbank (14 miles, mainly off road with some on-road sections); and Section 3 goes from Annbank to Ayr (9 miles, mainly on road and tarmac paths).
Checkpoints and support
A spokesperson for the organisers said: “There will be fruit, cold drinks and a friendly welcome at checkpoints every 10 miles and water stations every five miles. Drop-bags will be available at checkpoints as long as they have been marked with the appropriate race number and checkpoint number at registration. Rucksacks will also be conveyed to the finish.”
Athletes can take a bus to the starting point at Glenbuck from the Riverside Stadium, Ayr, departing at 7am, or from Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock, departing at 7.20am. Participants must book a seat on the bus, with a charge of £8 per person payable via the registration site Entry Central.
Facilities and registration
Riverside Stadium will be open from 6.30am on the day, but participants are asked to note that the facilities provide only male and female designated changing, toilet and showering facilities. Parking is available at the Stadium or Ayr Academy car park.
