Pulisic backs Amorim at AC Milan despite strange start

Christian Pulisic has expressed optimism about working with Ruben Amorim despite a “strange start” to life under the Portuguese tactician at AC Milan.

The former Manchester United head coach left Old Trafford in January following a dismal 14 months in charge. He returned to management in June, signing a two-year contract with AC Milan.

Mixed Start in Serie A

So far he has won half of his games with three victories out of six. The Serie A side are sitting two points off the top of the table and will return to domestic action with an away trip to Sassuolo next Sunday.

Pulisic missed the beginning of Amorim's reign due to injury and has only been selected three times by the Portuguese boss. Despite not spending a long time in his squad, the American winger is convinced of his manager's talents.

Pulisic's Verdict

He said: “I have a good relationship with him. We’re all learning his system and how he wants us to play. I’m very optimistic about him. The last match was perhaps one of our best; we want to keep up the momentum. So far, it has been positive.”

Describing the beginning to life under Amorim, where he found himself benched for the first five games, Pulisic explained: “It was a bit strange for me at the start of the season... Obviously, I always want to play. It’s not that I was upset with him or the team, but I always want to play. I was coming back from an injury; now I feel good and hope to get a bit more playing time.”

Amorim's Promise

When Pulisic was recovering from injury, the Milan boss praised his player's frustration at being left out of the team and promised to bring him back to the forefront. Amorim said: “Pulisic is upset at the moment because he has zero minutes, and I love that. I love that in my players. But he's ready to play. Let's not forget he had an injury, then in the first training he had a knock, and he stopped a little bit and returned.”

Since then, Pulisic has hit the ground running, winning man of the match in a 3-0 win over Lecce before the international break began. The AC Milan website praised the winger for being “constantly involved” in the action and “underlining his importance” in Amorim's future set-up.
