Team USA secured its 11th consecutive Presidents Cup victory on Sunday, defeating the International Team 17-13 at Medinah Country Club. The win was marked by a chaotic appearance from Donald Trump, an emotional moment for Scottie Scheffler's wife, and a withdrawal on the DP World Tour.
Team USA's dramatic comeback
Heading into Sunday's final round, the International Team, led by Si Woo Kim and Hideki Matsuyama, held a 10.5 to 7.5 lead after strong performances in the first three days. However, the Americans rallied, taking 9.5 of the available 12 points in the head-to-head singles matches.
Rookie Jacob Bridgeman secured the winning point on the 18th green. Of the 16 editions of the Presidents Cup to date, Team USA has won 14.
Trump's controversial presence
Trump, serving as Medinah Country Club's honorary chairman, was a prominent figure on Sunday. His presence brought an increased security presence, including metal detectors around grandstands, SWAT vehicles along parts of the course, and a bulletproof glass enclosure near the first tee box, though it wasn't used.
Organisers issued warnings for fans to arrive early due to heavy security delays. Some protesters appeared outside the course with signs and banners. When Trump was introduced at the first tee before the singles matches, he received a mixed reaction, with cheers and boos. A heckler yelled, "You suck!" during his opening remarks.
His speech lasted just one minute, despite expectations of at least 15. In it, he said: "The fake news media will say I got a very bad reception, but we got a good reception. They love what we're doing. The country is doing great."
The closing ceremonies caused confusion for fans trying to exit, with some scrambled by security as they attempted to watch Team USA celebrate alongside Trump. Young fans were reportedly denied viewing, and the final day ended with Trump among the American players lifting the trophy.
Scheffler's gesture moves wife
Scottie Scheffler, the World No. 1, defeated Nico Echavarria in the singles, marking his third win in the competition since his debut in 2022. At the 14th hole, as Echavarria lined up a 32-foot par putt, a heckler shouted during his backswing, causing him to miss badly to the right.
Scheffler confronted the spectator directly and conceded par on the hole. He later said: "There's just no place for that. I was very frustrated. It was honestly a big distraction, I think for me, just because we compete and work so hard to put ourselves in these moments."
When his wife, Meredith, learned of the incident and his concession, NBC Sports reported she was almost brought to tears, saying: "That makes me want to cry."
Fleetwood's French Open exit
Away from the Presidents Cup, Tommy Fleetwood apologised after withdrawing from the French Open at Le Golf National. He had carded rounds of 69 and 67 in the first two days but was forced to pull out before Saturday's third round after falling ill.
Fleetwood took to social media to apologise, writing: "I hated having to withdraw from the French Open this week. I honestly thought I might have had a chance of playing, but I was too ill. I'm so sorry to all the fans that supported this week and especially to all of the sponsors and organisers of such a great event. I have so many fond memories of Le Golf National and will be back in the future!"
Fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick took the title on the DP World Tour.
