Oscar Piastri's frustration boiled over during the Hungarian Grand Prix as he swore at his McLaren crew after a pit stop strategy error cost him a likely victory. The Australian, who had overtaken teammate Lando Norris on the first lap, saw his lead evaporate when the team's pit stop left him in traffic and exposed to a backmarker incident. "Mate, just don't fucking talk to me now," Piastri said over the radio, later adding sarcastically, "Nice of you guys to factor that one in by the way, thanks."
Race unravels after promising start
Piastri looked set to win his first Grand Prix in almost a year after passing Norris early in the race on a track known for limited overtaking opportunities. However, during the pit stops, Norris regained the lead, and a subsequent gearbox failure forced Piastri to retire. He ended the race seventh in the drivers' championship, a far cry from his position a year ago when he appeared destined to become world champion.
Reflecting on the race, Piastri said: "I'm feeling pretty disappointed. Pretty much everything that could have gone wrong did." Yet he was more conciliatory towards his team: "On the strategy side, you don't plan a strategy for getting taken out by a backmarker. So I can't blame the team at all for that."
Struggles amid new regulations
Piastri's dip in form comes as Formula One has introduced radically new power units for 2026, forcing all teams to adapt. McLaren, like others, has faced reliability issues, with electronics problems costing Piastri points in China and Belgium. He has also been consistently out-qualified by an improving Norris, failing to secure a front-row grid position all season.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella defended the team's harmony: "We race as a team and today was a well-executed race from a strategic and sporting principles point of view, which wouldn't be possible without two drivers who fully support our approach." Stella earlier noted that the new cars favor a more aggressive driving style, which comes more naturally to Norris than to Piastri.
Future prospects
Despite being contracted to McLaren until 2028, Piastri has been linked with a potential swap with Max Verstappen, whose relationship with Red Bull has been strained. However, Piastri's more diplomatic tone after the race suggests he values his current team. The Formula One series now takes a three-week break before the Dutch Grand Prix, where Piastri won last year and held a 34-point championship lead. Now, he faces an uphill battle to reclaim his status as one of the sport's top talents.
