PGA Tour golfer Sam Burns has described playing golf with Donald Trump, saying the US president is "exactly how you'd think he would be" and highlighting his "brutal honesty". The comments come as Trump faces fresh accusations of cheating after his latest victory.
Trump's Latest Golf Win Questioned
Trump, who is serving his second presidential term, won the Bedminster Club Championship at his Trump National Bedminster course in New Jersey earlier this month. He claimed victories in both the senior and super senior categories with a score of 70, posting a clip of his winning shot on Truth Social.
In his post, Trump wrote: "I won with a score of 70, and am so honoured in that, unlike the rest of the field, I'm given very little time to practice, because I'm focused on many other things. It's called TALENT, and I have it, and they don't!"
However, golf fans took to social media to question the legitimacy of his round. One fan claimed: "Watched him live for years, listened to his caddie's stories. Everyone around him allows him to cheat out of fear. Nothing he does is genuine. All his 'feats' are fake, and he actually feels special." Another alleged that footage showed his caddie repositioning the ball.
Burns Recalls Playing with Trump
Burns, a five-time PGA Tour winner who turned pro in 2017, played a round with Trump in 2024 and later spoke about the experience, which included dining at Mar-A-Lago with Trump and Elon Musk.
"People ask, 'What's he like?' He's exactly how you'd think he would be," Burns explained. "He's exactly what you see on TV: brutally honest. He's very open; you can pretty much ask him anything. And he loves golf. He has some really funny stories, so it's pretty cool to listen to. I asked him some stuff. I wasn't sure if he would answer or not, but he did."
Burns also noted the heavy security presence during the round: "On any hole, there are close to 20 carts. If you're paying attention and looking, you'll see snipers, secret service everywhere. It's funny, [because] I don't know if this is the safest place or the most dangerous place in the world to be. I think it's kind of both at the same time."
Trump regularly plays golf with well-known figures, including England football captain Harry Kane, but none have confirmed the cheating claims.
