Trey Nyoni believes his future could be at number six for Liverpool after enjoying a promising start to the season under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Nyoni has made four appearances so far this season, starting once in the Reds’ Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, featuring for 38 minutes in this season’s Premier League to date, such a total already comfortably eclipses the 21 minutes the England Under-20s international registered under Arne Slot during the entirety of the 2024/25 English top-flight campaign.
Trust shown by Iraola
Iraola demonstrated his trust in Nyoni by sending him on ahead of Ryan Gravenberch in the 71st minute during Liverpool’s last outing as they held onto a 1-0 lead away to AFC Bournemouth.
And while the 19-year-old is well-aware that he faces stern competition for places at Anfield, he believes he is perfectly suited to Iraola’s preferred style of football and is hungry to establish himself under the Basque.
Nyoni on his role and development
"I've developed a lot. I've been with the first team, training, I've had a little exposure here and there, which is valuable," he told the club’s matchday programme. "Obviously now it's just about trying to build on that and see where I can fit in the team."
"For sure it's about minutes, but minutes when it's right. I know it's not going to be easy because obviously there's a lot of senior players in the midfield that are also really, really good players, but they can also help me a lot."
"So, I understand that and I'm just trying to make sure that I'm ready whenever I'm needed."
"At the minute I've been playing as a six, so I assume that's the role that he (Iraola) probably sees me playing the most."
"I'm still willing to learn to play as the eight or wherever, but right now I'd probably say primarily a six."
Style of play suits Nyoni
"I'd say (Iraola’s style suits me) because it's just forward-thinking. As soon as you get the ball, it's just play forward."
"I think even the press as well is aggressive. He's big on the press and I think the best way to attack is starting with the press, which is important."
"Everything out of possession is important, so yeah, I'd say this suits me."
