Defiantly narrowly missed a big win at Royal Ascot but compensation is at hand. The four-year-old, by Kameko, was a slow burner – unraced at two and winning only one maiden last year. After a poor handicap debut, Joseph O'Brien added headgear. In the Ascot Stakes, with blinkers on and a marathon trip, Defiantly led inside the final half-mile and lost only by a head to stablemate Kizlyar. Up 4lb in the weights but unexposed at the distance, Dylan Browne McMonagle's mount can go one better. Alphonse Le Grande, Believitanducan and Maxi King are podium contenders.

2.25 HKJC World Pool Thoroughbred Stakes
Talk of New York drops in class and can return to winning ways. The Charlie Appleby-trained son of Wootton Bassett impressed on debut last October, winning by five and a half lengths. After a third in Listed grade in Dubai, he returned with a hood to win a conditions race at Newmarket and then the Listed Heron Stakes at Sandown by five and a half lengths. In the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, he finished a length and three-quarters third behind Bow Echo. This is a much easier task, and William Buick's mount should oblige. Shayem is improving and can chase him home, ahead of Saber Strike and Yazin.

3.00 Coral Golden Mile
Tribal Chief has been threatening a big win and today could be the day. The David Menuisier-trained five-year-old often starts slowly and needs a strong gallop and gaps. He was a staying-on sixth in this race last year, then won a course-and-distance handicap 23 days later. After a third in the Lincoln on return, he was strong at the finish in the Victoria Cup and then sixth at Sandown when the pace was too slow. With a fair pace expected, Jamie Spencer's hold-up style suits. Blue Brother, Bunyola Bay, Cerulean Bay and Mister Winston are others to consider.

3.35 King George Qatar Stakes
Rumstar, a four-time Group 3 winner, can make his presence felt at a higher level. The Jonathan Portman-trained five-year-old won the Cornwallis Stakes, Palace House Stakes, and two Coral Charges. In four Group 1 attempts, he was unlucky with draws and traffic, beating only one home in the King Charles III Stakes and Prix de l'Abbaye. But he was only half a length behind Night Raider in the Palace House Stakes last time, and with a decent pace, this race should suit. Night Raider is respected, along with Jakajaro and defending champion Jm Jungle.

4.10 Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes
Jonquil, proven at Group 2 level at Goodwood, can bounce back after two sub-par runs. The Andrew Balding-trained colt was ninth in the Lockinge and seventh in the Summer Mile, but earlier won the Listed Paradise Stakes at Ascot. On his Goodwood debut last year, he was unplaced in the Lennox Stakes but then won the Group 2 Celebration Mile by a neck. The extra furlong here suits Colin Keane's mount. Galen, Boiling Point and Crown Of Oaks can fight for places.

4.45 Hawes And Curtis Nursery Handicap
Revels looks fairly treated on handicap debut. The Karl Burke-trained son of Lope De Vega cost 350,000 guineas and won on debut at Redcar by three lengths. In the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, he was ninth but had an excuse – drawn on the far side. Stepping back to six furlongs suits, and his opening mark of 85 offers potential. Dubai Champion, Clash Of Hearts and Paper View are others to note.

5.20 World Pool Bet with the Tote Handicap
Into The Light didn't shine at Royal Ascot but it's early days. The Charlie Appleby-trained Dubawi colt won a 10-furlong maiden on debut, then was second twice before a 4-1 favourite in the King George V Handicap where he finished 11th. Now with cheekpieces, he retains potential. Kenergy, Pierian and Mythical Valentine are others to consider.

5.55 British Stallions Studs EBF Handicap
Room Fourteen is three from four in handicaps and has more to come. The James Fanshawe-trained daughter of Without Parole won on handicap debut at Great Yarmouth, was second to Venetia, then won at Redcar and Doncaster. Up 6lb to 83, but Ryan Moore is booked. Favourite Silver Lake is on the up, while Zgharta and Wisper are also in the mix.
