Newcastle United goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek will get a clearer indication of whether he is set for a run as Czechia's number one goalkeeper when they take on England at Wembley Stadium this evening.
Hornicek is competing with Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and PSV's former Manchester United shot-stopper Matej Kovar for his country's goalkeeper jersey, with head coach Santi Denia affording all three players starts across the UEFA Nations League so far.
Goalkeeper rotation in the Nations League
The Magpies goalkeeper was handed the gloves in Czechia's opening defeat to Croatia, before Kovar was handed a start in last Tuesday's defeat to England before Kinsky was handed an opportunity in their defeat against Spain.
And whoever gets the nod in their fourth match of the international break will likely move forward as number one with Hornicek hoping to have done enough to have convinced Denia after a strong start to life on Tyneside.
Impressive start at Newcastle
Hornicek tops the charts for most goals prevented per 90 minutes in the Premier League since his summer move from Braga, making a seamless transition from the Portuguese Primeira Liga to the English top flight.
He has quickly become a key member of Matthias Jaissle's side, with the Magpies head coach lavishing praise on the 24-year-old last month.
"An amazing job so far," Jaissle told Chronicle Live when asked about the impact of the Czech international. "[An] Amazing signing, a young lad as well and not easy coming into the Premier League and performing already on a high level and dealing with the pressure. As a keeper it is something else as well. So we are really pleased and we hope can continue to progress in the same way."
Injury concerns for the Magpies
And while Hornicek seeing off the competition to become the number one goalkeeper for his country will be an achievement everyone connected with the club will be proud of, there will be a little bit of trepidation inside the walls of St James' Park.
That is because fellow summer signing and second choice goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has returned from international duty with a hamstring injury. Jaouen had missed Newcastle's last four matches with an ankle injury but had returned to action for France's under-21 side.
The former Stade Reims goalkeeper started in the draw with Iceland and France's win over Estonia but then picked up a hamstring injury in training that ruled him out of Saturday's win over Luxembourg.
He is expected to miss Monday's trip to Coventry City when United resume Premier League action and that means third choice goalkeeper Nick Pope is likely to continue in the matchday squad as Hornicek's deputy.
Pope's situation at St James' Park
Pope has been an excellent goalkeeper for Newcastle and spent the previous four seasons as the club's number one. But Newcastle informed the England international they were going to go in a different direction in the goalkeeping department this summer and Pope was expected to leave the club as a result.
But no serious offers presented themselves and it left the 34-year-old facing a season as Newcastle's number three goalkeeper. It means the Magpies are a Hornicek injury away from a situation where a goalkeeper they told was surplus to requirements will be back in the side.
It means Newcastle will be watching on nervously in the hope Hornicek, and England left-back Lewis Hall, come through the clash at Wembley unscathed and will be fit to join back up with their club team-mates ahead of their first trip to Coventry since a League Cup win in 2008.
