Manchester Half 2026 road closures: Full list as 32,000 set to run

The Manchester Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 4, with more than 32,000 people expected to take part in this year's event. That figure is up from the 22,500 who participated last year, when runners raised over £1.8m for charities and organisations close to their hearts.

The 13.1-mile route will both start and end in Old Trafford, taking in Hulme, Stretford, Sale and Chorlton along the way. Live DJs and 'cheer zones' will be set up to motivate participants as they complete the course.

Event schedule and travel advice

The first participants will set off at 8.50am, with further waves starting in nine-minute periods until just after 11am. Due to the scale of the event, a number of road closures will be in place to ensure things run safely and smoothly.

While most road closures are understood to be in place until around 4.30pm, some roads will open earlier at 1pm, and a small number will be required to close until about 8.30pm. People in the affected areas have been advised to use public transport where possible, as roads will be busy and drivers are likely to face delays.

Transport for Greater Manchester has said it will be putting on extra Metrolink tram services throughout the day to keep up with demand. Steve Gilholme, Head of Events at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “The Manchester Half Marathon is another one of those special occasions where the people of Greater Manchester and beyond come together, with thousands of people taking on the challenge and raising money for good causes, while many more will line the route to cheer them on.”

He added: “This does mean the city centre and especially trams will be incredibly busy so please plan ahead and give yourself extra time to make journeys.”
