Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has opened up about his injury struggles, admitting the extended layoff has been difficult as he targets a return to action. The Brazilian is hoping to be back in contention for the Magpies' trip to Coventry City's Coventry Building Society Arena on October 12, having been sidelined by a muscle injury carried over from last season.
Long road to recovery
Joelinton missed a clutch of games last season through hamstring and thigh injuries and only played a bit-part role in pre-season after not featuring again following his stint as captain in the 3-1 defeat at Everton. Now back in training, he is looking forward to making his first appearance of the 2026/27 campaign.
Speaking to Chronicle Live, Joelinton said: "The plan is to be back now after the international break. I am feeling really good. I have worked hard and worked smart, I can't wait to be back and be with the team, the boys and the new players and in front of the fans again."
Change on Tyneside
It has been a time of change at St James' Park, with Matthias Jaissle replacing head coach Eddie Howe and the formation of a new leadership group including Joelinton. However, the former Hoffenheim star admits it has been hard to enjoy some of the positivity built up in recent weeks due to his own absence.
Joelinton said: "I would not say it has been good because I have not been able to play or do what I love. I want to help the club and the boys on the pitch at this moment. But I am recovering, and I am feeling good now. It has been a long journey since the end of last season, when I had my first injury, then came back and felt it again."
Injury-free aim
The aim for Joelinton will be an injury-free run in the team after last season was disrupted four times through various issues. After getting to the bottom of the problem with the new medical team, Joelinton has confidence that can happen.
He said: "Now I am feeling better and I can't wait to be back on the pitch, I can't wait to wear the shirt again and play for the fanbase again, I have really missed it."
Dan Burn, Amar Dedic, Anthony Elanga, Nico Gonzalez, Ewen Jaouen, Tino Livramento, William Osula and Jacob Ramsey all missed the clash with Hull City, but both Burn and Joelinton have now declared they will be back for Coventry. Joelinton's return would give Jaissle food for thought as Joe Willock, Lewis Miley and Sean Steur battle for places in midfield, with the influence of the £40million man back in the dressing room a major plus.
