The Republic of Ireland will take on Israel in their Nations League Group B3 fixture at the Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen, Hungary, on Sunday, September 27. The match, which has been surrounded by controversy, will be played at a neutral venue with no Irish fans present.
Bazunu withdraws and players vote
Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, the Bolton No.1 linked with Celtic in the summer, will not be part of the squad after he withdrew in protest at Israel's actions amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The Ireland players held a vote over whether to play the game. The FAI said that refusing to play, as well as the return fixture which Ireland will 'host' in Serbia, would "cause significant and lasting harm to Irish football". Former Republic of Ireland boss Brian Kerr said the vote was 14-8 in favour of playing, with Bazunu excluded from the vote.
