Stephen Glass has turned down the chance to hold talks over the vacant Scotland under-21 job. The Scottish Football Association is now well-advanced in their search to replace Scot Gemmill.
SFA chiefs approached Glass to see if he would be interested in talks. The 50-year-old is currently out of work after he left Ferencvaros in the summer, where he was assistant manager to Robbie Keane. Glass didn't feel it was the right time.
Glass's career and Keane's situation
The former Scotland international is expected to remain as part of Keane's backroom team longer term. Glass has previously managed Aberdeen, Memphis 901 and been interim at Atlanta United.
Keane is still out of work but is actively looking for the right job and right league for his return to management. The former Republic of Ireland international was interviewed for the Celtic job, but it was always on the proviso that Martin O'Neill didn't decide to continue, which he did. Keane was also linked with the Slovan Bratislava job, but Yaya Toure and Darren O'Dea took that.
Scotland's coaching vacancies
The Scotland senior and under-21 teams are both looking for head coaches. Steve Clarke stepped down after the World Cup and that remains the priority, ahead of the Nations League fixtures. Roberto Martinez and John McGlynn are just two of the names tipped for the job, although the Spaniard has also held talks over the vacant head coach job of the Netherlands.
Gemmill stepped down after 13 years in the position. It gives new Scottish Football Association football officer Craig Mulholland a blank canvas to make two major appointments. The likes of Stevie Naismith, Graeme Murty and Scott Brown have all been linked with the under-21 position.
